SLC Assessment

Sail Anywhere in the World

SLC stands for Sailing License and Credentials, and it's the Sailing License that NauticEd issues to allow recreational sailors to legally charter a sailboat in the Mediterranean; but more than that, it is a globally accepted sailing license by port authorities and yacht charter companies. It can be issued to any citizen of any country in the world.
Below you'll find the entire step-by-step process to follow to earn your SLC. You can go from absolute novice to licensed sailor just by completing the steps!

International Sailing License and Credentials (SLC™)

The International Sailing License and Credentials or SLC is a recreational sailing license valid for all yacht charter companies worldwide including Europe and the Seychelles. To earn your SLC, you must take online theory self-paced classes, log previous sufficient sailing experience on boats of reasonably similar size, and demonstrate practical sailing skills according to internationally established sailing standards.

We are qualified NauticEd SLC Assessors! Contact us today to book your SLC on-the-water practical assessment.

Earning your SLC is a relatively straightforward and simple process!
  • Create a NatiucEd Account

Sign in to your NauticEd account (it’s free and easy to create if you don’t already have one). As a bonus, you will get two free sailing courses and a free sailor’s online logbook.

    Step 1

  • Complete Online Courses & the SLC Exam

Complete the Bareboat Charter Master course with us. It includes online study with multiple-choice tests, which you can take at your own pace, and practical on-the-water training with Captain Josh.

Once you have your Bareboat Charter Master certification, you can take the free SLC Online Examination. After you pass the exam, book your practical on-the-water assessment with us. It takes about 6 hours, and includes a 45-minute written exam at the end.

    Step 2

  • Get your Government-Issued Boater Card

In the USA you'd get your State Boater Safety Card (free) or US Coast Guard Captain License. In Canada, you'd get your Pleasure Craft Operator Card. Check your local authority on how to get your boater card or license. Once you have it, upload it to your NauticEd account.

    Step 3

  • Rack up Practical Sailing Experience

Included with your NauticEd account is a free electronic logbook. Add entries of your past sailing experience and all subsequent experience from now onward. For the SLC, you need at least 50 days of experience, 25 as a master of the vessel and 25 on a boat greater than 28 ft. (8.6m).

    Step 4

  • Pay the SLC License Fee

The fee for the SLC sailing license is $95, and is valid for 3 years. Renewing is easy: log 10 sailings in the past 2 years or 5 in the past year, then retake and pass the free SLC exam. Renewal is $45 for an additional 3 years.
