Description
This trip is never the same twice! There are so many options for anchoring, and so much to see, it’s almost impossible to write one description for this trip… but this is generally how things will go:
DAY 1
- We all meet at Escape Velocity by 9am – make introductions, a quick orientation to the boat, stow your personal belongings aboard, and just take it all in – that you’re here, and the adventure you’re about to embark on!
- A safety briefing, discuss current weather conditions and expectations, discussion about the general trip/passage plan, and departure plan – break for lunch.
- Depart from marina and spend the afternoon sailing around San Carlos, taking anchorage in San Carlos that afternoon.
- Weather window permitting, we prefer to spend the first night aboard at anchor near San Carlos, which gives everyone the opportunity to get settled aboard, get well rested, and fully orientated with the vessel and crew, before departing for the crossing of the Sea.
- The remainder of the afternoon/evening will be devoted to vessel safety orientation and preparing expectations and crew schedules for the first passage, which may include over-night watch schedules.
- And, of course, enjoying the local landscape, scenery, shore excursion to local beaches or shops if desired, and generally enjoying the company!
DAY 2
- Early departure from San Carlos, the crossing will typically take 12 to 14hrs to complete, with a planned arrival in evening at Punta Chivato.
- This is an off-shore passage of nearly 90 nautical miles, so there is lots of opportunity to enjoy a fully invested day of sailing at sea, adjusting to varying sailing conditions, reviewing various boat operations, sailing fundamentals, navigating, etc.
- Snacks and meals are prepared and enjoyed under passage, with several options to adapt to a variety of conditions and appetites.
- It is likely that the later part of this passage will be after dark, so discussion of night sailing and watch shifts will give you firsthand experience with the absolute magic that is night-sailing!
- Arrival will also likely be after dark, so this is a great opportunity to see how we safely prepare to come into safe harbor at night utilizing RADAR and GPS and excellent seamanship for approaching anchorage at night (the PRO tips and tricks it would take you years to learn on your own!)
- We settle in for the remainder of the night to rest up for an exciting morning!
DAY 3
- Waking up at Punta Chivato, we enjoy a bit of a leisurely start to the morning with coffee and breakfast, before preparing for another day of sailing!
- The trip from Punta Chivato will take about 4-6hrs, so we can enjoy some flexibility in our timing to get to Santispac anchorage during daylight.
- That afternoon, we will have time to settle in and enjoy all that the beaches of Santispac have on offer!
DAY 4 & 5
- For the next two days, our options are plenty, and all a lot of fun! We can choose from at least 7 different anchoring spots, all within a few hours, each offering up something a little different.
- There’s a variety of recreating we can enjoy, from swimming, snorkeling, spearfishing, kayaking, cook-outs on the beach, a hike to the petroglyphs, coffee or beer at one of the totally quaint beach cafés, and any number of beach activities…whatever your heart desires!
DAY 6
- We start out with an early morning to enjoy a hearty breakfast and our beautiful surroundings.
- By early morning, we are beginning our departure out of the Bahia and back to the Sea, where we again point south for our heading to Punta Pulpito.
- We enjoy snacks and lunch underway, and take anchor later in the afternoon, dinner aboard on anchor.
DAY 7
- We start out with a leisurely morning to enjoy a hearty breakfast and the beautiful scenery.
- Departing late morning for another breathtaking destination, this time we’re heading to San Juanico! This is only a few hours sail.
- By early afternoon, we’re enjoying another breathtaking anchorage, with opportunities for beach excursions and water activities.
- Dinner aboard, or beach BBQ!
DAY 8
- After yet another relaxed morning and lots of coffee, we depart again mid-morning for our next destination of Isla Coronados!
- This is about a 4hr trip, so we will have all afternoon to again enjoy other-worldly beauty of a remote island anchorage!
DAY 9
- Easy morning again, and we have the option to hang out at Isla Coronado for the day and dinghy and swim around the various white sand coves, or we can take another short sail to Isla Carmen.
- Another relaxed afternoon, dinner aboard, or beach BBQ, and water activities or hiking.
DAY 10
- No rush to get going this morning, we’re only a couple hours of a sail from either Isla Coronado or Carmen to get to the final destination of Loreto!
- Afternoon debrief of the trip, and preparations to disembark from the vessel.
The nature of passage-making is a balance of setting goals and accounting for weather, and any other contingencies that can and do arise on passage. As such, we have built in a reasonable amount of time into the schedule to ensure the safety, comfort, and fun levels are prioritized for all participants. We don’t stick to a strict itinerary as a result, as experience dictates that the trip is far more enjoyable when assessing conditions and situations in real time, and again taking into consideration the rest and wellbeing of crew. Passage making is more physically demanding than many realize, and therefore it’s paramount to exercise good situational awareness to get the moat out of the experience, for learning and for the sake of making lasting positive memories of the experience!
